Sonia's list of woes

If Jayalalithaa had been in Sonia's shoes, she would have consulted Unnikrishnan Nambudri by now and perhaps performed a yagna or two. Last two weeks have been quite bad for Sonia. Look at her current list of woes.

1) Jharkand - With Supreme Court coming down heavily on Governor Razi and the UPA government in the State, embarassment is too small a word.

2) Bihar - Though it is governing the state through its agent Buta Singh, the fractured mandate in the assembly elections have exposed its irrelevance in the state. Add to that, an agitated Lalu who would use the next available opportunity to hit back. Also, BJP is doing enough to woo Paswan to its side.

3) Haryana - It should have been the happiest regions for Congress as it got a huge mandate in its favour. But Sonia blundered by humiliating Bajan Lal, who was responsible for the party's revival. He is a volcano waiting to erupt.

4) Kerala - Karunakaran once again makes a mockery of the party regulations, so-called discipline etc. Despite warnings, he has gone ahead with a rally against the ruling Congress government in the state. What is more humiliating is that, the turnout for the rally is huge.

5) Tamilnadu - Though the DMK has shut its mouth for now, the controversy over Elangovan-Karunanidhi duel last week has done enough to strain the alliance between the two at the State level. Few more sparks and the stage would be ready for the nice drama.

All this in two weeks is far too much for even an experienced politician, let alone Sonia. But some of them - especially the first two are of her own making. Lot more to write, but the Indian Voter is in the same boat as Sonia - in the middle of so many things.

Chitra:: It works both ways Chitra. Sonia is both the best & worst thing for Congress.

If she isn't around, there would be numerous Congress parties each one headed by Arjun Singh, Pranab Mukherjea and so on. Remember the period b/n 91-96? Even when they were in power, they couldn't hold on together. In the current state, India needs two national parties. It would be dangerous if either Congress or BJP becomes irrelevant.

On the other hand, Sonia is the biggest liability to Congress. Apart from the foreign origin issue, she doesn't appear to have half a brain that we expect from an average person. Have you ever heard any policy statements from that lady - on any issue?

Indian voter, I started reading your posts with a healthy appreciation for your awareness of the current events and interest. However, now I feel you are also just touching the superfluous matters only, instead of working on an informed political analysis. I feel this is especially evident on your answers to the comments which are rather plain and as if you know the ultimate truth about each issue posted by the readers.

While you disparage Sonia for everything other than holding the congress together, I think you are missing the larger part of how any democracy could actually work. It seems you have the simple notion that democracy will work just by the voice of the people expressed through votes for an able set of lawmakers who could debate and decide on how to lead the country. That is true, but only on books. To work a democracy efficiently, especially for a federal state like India, you need more than that. What is needed is an intelligentsia that has an idea about where the country should be directed. These need not be visible centres of power. It could even be a single person with a spiritual or political reckoning or a group with similar pursuits. It could even be for preservation of financial interests for their own survival. However, such centres are what propel all modern democracies that prosper. BJP and the right wing parties had this in Sangh Parivar. However, with the over indulgence/exposure of SP has now actually faded their significance. What Sonia could provide is the front face for an alternate centre of power which is needed to neutralise the effect of right wing interests. Policy making and implementation will be ultimately the responsibilities of the elected representatives. I know that someone is going to question me that Sonia and others are also elected. But I feel that it is only the need of the time as that is the only way the Indian people will get connected to Congress. However, I still regard that 'inner voice' as respectable. And I am one who had the least respect for a corrupt congress. So at the end of the day, I believe Sonia is the best thing that could happen to Congress at this turn of the history.

Dear Anonymous

Thanks for dropping by and your comments.

1) I agree with your observation on my plain answerst to the comments. This is mainly due to lack of time and also due to the fact that many a times, I feel it appropriate to write a separate post on the issues raised by my readers through the comments.

I get to know about the politics only through the media and I don't have any "connections" with anyone, anywhere near the corridors of power. So, I don't have any idea about the ultimate truth.

2) I fully agree with your funda on the necessity of intelligentsia on the direction the country should move on. Do you honestly think that Sonia & her coterie has any idea about the direction at which the country is moving. Constructive or not, Sangh Parivar had some idea, but I strongly feel that Sonia doesn't have anything of that kind.

I too say that Sonia is the best thing that could happen to Congress now (& you are also saying the same), but if only she is a lil more smarter (think we differ here).

Anyway, thanks very much for your comments and I would appreciate further constructive comments from you.

for whatever reasons, a party can't be run by a single leader. neither prime minister alone can't take a decison without consulting his cabinet ministers. a lot of backroom work goes before a minister or politican makes a statement on policy. as freelance people, we speak whatever we deem is correct, but when it comes to implementation, things turn topsy turvy since we have paid little attention on the flip side.

i accept sonia is certainly much better than thousands of indian politicians. atleast intelligent congress leaders around have used to stay in cohesion and managed to turn the stability of party into votes. what else a party needs! i'm happy and cheer for leaders like sonia.
